3 jailed 90 years each for robbery with violence, child defilement

An Eldoret court has jailed three men 90 years each for robbery with violence and defilement.

Isaac Maiyo Bett, Gilbert Manase Lime and Josphat Kipruto Bett were found guilty of violently robbing Ms Belinda Wamalwa of items including her laptop, Nokia and Samsung mobile phones and a DVD player.

They also stole her home theatre system, three pairs of shoes, five skirts, eight chickens, six glasses and one turkey, all valued at Sh200,000, in Lugari Sub-county, Kakamega.

The three were also found guilty of raping three children who were at the home during the attack.

"On the first three counts of robbery with violence, you are each sentenced to 30 years in jail for each count. The sentences will run concurrently," the magistrate said.

"On the three counts of gang defilement, each one of you will serve jail terms of 20 years on each count. The sentences will run consecutively."

THE CRIMES

The crimes were committed at Bandari in Mwamba Sub-location on July 3, 2016.

The court heard that the three and their accomplices who were not in court attacked the home while armed with weapons including pangas, rungus and iron bars.

The charge sheet further stated that they threatened to mete out violence on Ms Wamalwa.

Mr Barasa granted the convicts 14 days to appeal the judgment.
