Cleophas Malala: My 48-hour ordeal in police cell

From falling sick to choking in tear gas, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has narrated his 48-hour ordeal at Kisumu Central Police Station cell.

The senator, who was released at 10.45pm on Sunday, claimed he was tortured by the authorities who also barred his doctor from seeing him after he fell ill.

“My room had no proper ventilation, the police harassed and kicked me. At some point, I lost consciousness before my bodyguard was allowed to resuscitate me,” Malala told reporters in Kisumu on Sunday.

He accused the officers at Kisumu Central Police Station of denying him food and medication until Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi intervened.

“I want my doctor do a (medical) report and reveal to the world what police subject people in cells to,” said Mr Malala.

The senator has vowed to sue Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai for unlawful detention.

PREPARING SUIT

“My legal team is preparing the suit and when the time comes, I will go to court to get justice for unlawful detention,” said Mr Malala.

Mr Malala was arrested over an alleged involvement in the recent Matungu killings.

His freedom came few hours after Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji ordered that the politicians who had been arrested in connection to Matungu killings, be released.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and Mayoni Ward Representative Libinus Oduori were arrested on Friday.
Matungu MP Justus Murunga presented himself to the detectives at the Western region police headquarters in Kakamega and was later moved to Kisii Police Station.
