Police in Kakamega have arrested two people suspected to be involved in witchcraft after a coffin containing the decomposing body of baby girl was dumped in the compound of a local primary school.

Panic gripped pupils and teachers of Munanga Primary School in Kakamega North Sub-County on Tuesday after they found the coffin abandoned next to one of the classrooms.

Kabras North Sub-County Commissioner Tom Nyatete said the suspects had claimed they were invited to conduct prayers and exorcise ghosts reported to have been haunting pupils.

The incident disrupted learning after parents stormed the school demanding to be told how the coffin had found its way into the compound.

Police were called in to restore calm after angry parents threatened to lynch the suspects.

Mr Nyatete said more suspects linked to the incident were being sought.

"We have made good progress in our investigations and expect to arrest more suspects for questioning," said Mr Nyatete.

Parents at the school said unknown people have been entering the school compound at night and defecating in classrooms.

The administrator said security would be intensified in the school to ensure normal learning progresses smoothly.
