A family is mourning three brothers after a swimming outing turned tragic.

The teenagers from Khwisero constituency drowned in River Yala on Sunday.

They are said to have left their home at Ebushirika Village in the morning after everybody else had gone to church.

Kisa East senior chief Walter Obuchere said 17-year-old Walter Musiomi drowned as he attempted to rescue his siblings, Clinton Oluyali, 14, and Joseph Makotsi, 13.

It took villagers several hours to search for and retrieve the bodies from the water. “Fortunately, we had experienced divers who assisted in retrieving the bodies,” said Mr Obuchere.

The family, which requested to bury the bodies without postmortem examinations, was expected to appear in a Butere court yesterday to swear an affidavit and be allowed to start burial arrangements.

Residents said this was not the first time for such an incident to take place in the area. “Three people, including a woman with a child tied on her back, drowned in the same river several years ago and to date their bodies have not been found,” said Mr Obuchere.

Several others have committed suicide in the river.

CROCODILE ATTACK

Elsewhere, a middle-aged woman died after she was attacked by a crocodile on Sunday evening.

The incident happened at Kijiji cha Wazee in Tana River County.

A villager, Mr Salim Godana, said the woman was fetching water from River Tana when the crocodile attacked her.

“We were seated on the banks when we saw some clothes in the centre of the river. We approached them using our vessel, only to find a human being,” said Mr Godana. The woman was bitten on the stomach and one of her legs was cut off.
