A university student and his father were lynched by a mob in Kakamega County on accusation that they had robbed a trader of Sh30,000.

Four other people who were said to be their accomplices escaped.

Police say the gang of six accosted and robbed Mr Jaini Patel along Musanda-Mumias road on Sunday evening while he was travelling to Mumias town after he had closed his shop.

The young man was a second year student at the Kisii University studying criminology while his father was a businessman at Shiatsala market in Butere.

Mumias police boss Peter Kattam said the suspects used a Probox vehicle to block the vehicle Mr Patel was travelling in at Nyamila Bridge before they robbed him of the money.

“They then tried to escape through Musanda shopping centre but members of the public including boda boda riders blocked the road,” explained Mr Kattam.

The group got out of their vehicle and fled on foot towards Butere.

Motorcycle riders pursued them and caught up with two. They clobbered them before setting them a blaze.

The vehicle they were using was also burnt to ashes.

Mr Kattam said police are hunting for the four men who escaped.
