Farmers in Munyaka in Karura, Kiambu County, have lost crops after flood water washed through their farms when two dams in the area burst their walls Friday night.

More than 30 farms in the valley of Karura River were affected during the 9pm incident that occurred after the embankments of ADC and Muchene dams broke down, discharging water downstream.

Most of the farms that were affected are those in the valley of River Karura, in an area stretching more than three kilometres.

Maize, beans and horticulture farms suffered the most damage.

"Some plants were washed downstream and others flattened by the flood water," Stanley Ngugi, a resident of Munyaka told the Nation.

The two dams are used to irrigate horticulture farms in the area, Ngigi said.

One resident and his family fled from their home after their homestead was flooded. There were, however, no casualties in the incident.

Farmers are yet to determine the full extent of their loss since most farms are still submerged in water and debris.
