Police in Ruiru have arrested a rape and robbery with violence suspect after tracking him for the last two months.

Ruiru Police Commander James Ng'etich told Nation that the suspect, Samuel Chege, 20, had been committing the crimes alone and sometimes in the company of three other suspects. He said the rate of crime had increased in Mwihoko, Kahawa Sukari and Githurai areas of Kiambu County.

"He seems to have networks within Githurai area with whom he collaborates to steal from innocent residents and rape women. They are usually armed with guns, knives and other crude weapons. We are trailing his accomplices," Ng'etich said.

P3 FORMS

The suspect was trailed by police after his victims, mainly women whom he had raped in the presence of their husbands, recorded statements and filled P3 forms at the station.

"We began trailing the suspect with the help of the victims and members of the public and today we traced him to a building near Githurai-Kimbo police station," Ng'etich said.

During the raid, police recovered two flat screen television sets, national identity cards, sim cards and a smart phone that had been stolen from one of his victims from a house in Kawangware.

ROBBERY

"He shall be arraigned in court on Friday to face robbery with violence and rape charges at the Thika Magistrates Court," Mr Ng'etich said.

The officer attributed frequent incidents of crime in Ruiru to the presence of criminal gangs who have been trickling in from the neighbouring Kayole, Dandora, Kahawa West and Juja areas.

"They (criminals) sneak into Ruiru, commit crime and return to their hideouts. We are warning them that their days are numbered," Ng'etich said.
