Police in Ruiru gunned down two suspected robbers in Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu County.

Two more armed suspects managed to escape in the early Sunday morning incident.

Confirming the incident, Ruiru Police Commander James Ng'etich said the suspects had been robbing women at the area when officers on night patrol heard their screams.

"Our officers ran to where the screams were coming from and found four robbers stealing from the women. The robbers started firing at the officers but they were overpowered," said Mr Ng'etich.

The killing of the two robbers comes barely two weeks after three other suspected robbers were shot dead by the police while stealing from a cosmetic products go-down in Ruiru on the Eastern bypass.

One of the shot robbers was identified as a resident of Baba Dogo in Nairobi County.

Kahawa Wendani MCA Cyrus Omondi urged area residents to be on the lookout for the criminals who have been stealing from locals.

"We are asking the residents of this area who are able to identify the criminals to alert the police when they spot them within the vicinity for action," Mr Ng'etich asked the residents.

BHANG

Meanwhile, Kiambu County Police Commander Adiel Nyange warned criminals, especially those peddling hard drugs including bhang, cocaine and heroin in the region.

He was speaking at Makongeni, Thika where police displayed 300kg of bhang valued at Sh12m that was nabbed from two brothers who were transporting it to a client on the Thika-Garissa highway early Sunday morning.

Police said the bhang, packed in eight sacks, was brought in from Migori County.

Mr Nyange said the suspects have similar cases in a Naivasha court.

A day earlier, Juja police nabbed bhang and heroin near the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina said Thika was grappling with the challenge of illicit brews, gambling and hard drugs following the mushrooming of colleges and universities in the area.

"Thika is basically a colleges’ town with about 46 in total, young minds that are highly susceptible to the allure of the drug barons. We are putting the barons on notice and we are telling them that we are not going to allow our children be absorbed in this nonsense. Enough is enough. Your days are numbered," warned the MP.
