Boss yields in probe over Malindi building collapse

One of the directors of Palm Developers Limited, which is behind the construction of the eight-storey building that collapsed in Malindi killing one and injuring 26 others, has surrendered to police.

Mr Shabbirali Fakhuddin, the son of Mr Shabir Kasamale who died in the October 26 tragedy, gave himself up to detectives for questioning. He will be arraigned later.

Malindi DCI boss Anthony Sunguti said Mr Fakhruddin gave them names of the engineers who carried out the project.

“He will also help us ascertain if the building was cleared by relevant government bodies and if they had the correct documents,” Mr Sunguti said.

Police are still searching for the contractors and other Palm Developers Limited bosses. The building was known as Palm Heights.

Nema director Samuel Lopokoiyit said the developer applied for an environmental assessment report in 2013 but it was rejected. “We rejected his proposal because his plans were not clear,” he said.​​
