Police in Kisii on Monday raided Kisii Discount Stores and seized 185 bags of suspected contraband sugar.

Kisii Central police boss Francis Nguli said the sugar, may be part of the bad sugar in the Kenyan market.

"We received information from members of the public about the sugar. We are going to do analysis with other stakeholders of the government including Kenya Bureau of Standards and the government chemist," said Mr Nguli.

He said after the analysis, they will make a decision on the way forward and whether the sugar is fit for human consumption.

He urged members of public to continue being vigilant and ensure goods being consumed are not a health hazard.

But Kisii Discount Stores owner Mr Patel Bhagat said he is shocked that the sugar is termed as contraband even after buying it directly from Sukari Industries in Ndhiwa, Homabay County and Trans Mara Sugar Company in Narok County.
