Kisii traders protest as kiosks pulled down

Traders in Kisii town were yesterday counting losses after their kiosks were demolished by the county government to pave way for construction of modern structures.
Traders on Sansora, Zonic and Family Bank streets said they lost goods worth millions of shillings.
Traffic in the town was disrupted for hours as the more than 200 small-scale traders protested on Sansora Street.
The traders, mainly vendors, said the businesses were their only source of income.
They asked the county government to offer them alternative sites to run their businesses, accusing it of failing to notify them of the demolitions.

“We have not been in business for the last two days and our efforts to reach senior officials have been futile. They are not ready to listen to us,” said Mr Geoffrey Magoma, a shoes seller.
However, Lands and Urban Development executive Moses Onderi told Nation the county government would ensure all the affected traders are relocated.
“I have received their grievances and will ensure they have alternative locations for business as we plan the town,” Mr Onderi said.
He cautioned traders against doing business along the roads.
