Passengers hurt after Kisumu-bound bus overturns in Awasi

Passengers aboard a bus heading to Kisumu from Nairobi have escaped with minor injuries after the vehicle veered off the road and overturned at Awasi.

At least 48 passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Ahero and Nyando hospitals.

Benard Ojiambo, an eye witness, said the Kawere Bus veered off the road after overtaking a truck along the Nairobi-Kisumu highway.

β€œIt was around 11:30am (Wednesday). The bus overtook a truck but veered off the road and overturned. The (injured) passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals,” said Mr Ojiambo.

He said both the bus driver and his conductor escaped into a nearby sugarcane plantation after the bus overturned.

Nyanza Traffic Police Boss Andrew Naibei said 44 adults and four children received treatment at the Ahero Hospital and were discharged.

Mr Naibei warned drivers to be careful and observe traffic rules while on the road.
