Police in Kisumu are investigating circumstances under which a KCSE candidate alleged to have been involved in a confrontation with another student died Friday.

The 18-year-old student at Otieno Oyoo High School in Rabuor, Kisumu County collapsed and died at 3pm after he was allegedly hit by a fellow student, hours after sitting his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Physics exam paper.

“He fell after being knocked on his neck by another student,” one student said.

When Nation.co.ke visited the school Friday evening, a sombre mood had engulfed the institution that is situated along the Kisumu-Kericho highway.

His parents, who were called to the school after the incident, demanded an explanation from the school on how their son, whom they said was healthy, lost his life.

DEVASTATED BY NEWS

His father William Akumba said that he was devastated by the news, adding that the school should explain to him how his son died.

“I want the school to explain. My son was doing fine yesterday, and his teacher only knows what happened,” he said at Rabuor Health Centre where his son had been taken minutes after collapsing.

Mr Akumba said that the circumstances in which his son lost his life were still a mystery.

“The school called me to say that my son had died. I do not want a dead son, I want my son,” an angry Mr Akumba said.

The parents said that their son was fine when his mother visited him Thursday.

“He had called to say that he lacked soap and other basics.

"When I saw him, he was healthy. I do not know how he died,” his mother said.

Preliminary investigation, police sources said, showed that the student was hit on the neck.
