A teacher and eight students were recuperating at a Kisumu hospital on Saturday after a school bus they were travelling in was involved in a road accident on Friday evening.

One student succumbed to his injuries at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital, where the injured had been rushed to.

CRASH

Students from Rapogi Secondary School and St John's Ngutu in Seme were returning to their schools after participating in term one school games at a nearby school, when their bus crashed at Kombewa along the Kisumu-Bondo road.

The deceased student was from Rapogi School.

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong’o and Seme MP James Nyikal visited the survivors at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOORTH) in Kisumu County on Saturday.

Medics said the nine will remain in hospital for observation.

OUT OF DANGER

According to Mr Julius Awuonda, the officer in charge of the ward where the victims were admitted, a majority of them suffered mild head injuries and fractures and had undergone surgery.

He said all of them were in stable condition and would soon be discharged.

“A majority of them have just come from the theatre and none of them is in danger,” said Mr Awuonda.

The students and the teacher were transferred to Jaramogi Hospital from Kombewa Sub-County Hospital.

The body of the deceased was also moved to Jaramogi Hospital's mortuary.

LOST CONTROL

Nyanza regional traffic boss Andrew Naibei said the driver of the bus was trying to avoid a head-on collision.

"We understand that there was a matatu that was coming from the opposite direction and the driver of the bus was avoiding a head-on collision but he lost control and it overturned, “said Mr Naibei.

Governor Nyong’o asked traffic police officers to be on alert to prevent accidents.

"We all value life and therefore our police should do their job well to save the lives of people. It is sad when life and injuries are caused through carelessness of our drivers on the roads," said Governor Nyong'o.
