Three people including a one-month-old baby died in a crash involving a fuel tanker and a three-wheeler (tuk tuk) at the Kachok roundabout along the Kisumu-Nairobi highway Tuesday night.

George Ochieng, a boda boda rider who witnessed the crash, said the trailer which was heading to Kisumu town lost control and veered off the road.

It hit the tuk tuk which was picking passengers at the nearby bus stage, dragging it on the road with its occupants screaming for their lives.

"Two women who were in the tuk tuk died on the spot while others including a child was rushed to hospital," said Mr Ochieng.

Nyanza regional traffic boss Andrew Naibei said the child died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

He said five people, four men and a woman were admitted at the Kisumu County Hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

During the incident, some residents from the neighbouring Nyalenda slums resorted to siphoning fuel from the tanker.

Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
