Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has promised to work even harder after a survey on Tuesday ranked him the best city county chief.

Compared to his Nairobi and Mombasa counterparts Mike Sonko and Hassan Joho, Prof Nyong’o emerged the best in the County Citizens’ Score Card by Trends and Insights for Africa (Tifa) survey.

Respondents rated Kisumu as the best performing county with a score of 56 per cent (C+) followed by Mombasa with 53 per cent (C) and Nairobi with a score of 44 per cent (D+).

On Tuesday, Prof Nyong’o said he was excited with the rating but promised to work even harder.

“We shall learn from the critique in the survey and work even harder to uplift the standard of living of our people in line with our manifesto and motto "TICH TIRE" (work in progress),” the governor said.

“Our people, like Oliver Twist, will always ask for more service, and this is their legitimate right.”

According to the poll, sewerage systems and construction of feeder roads are still a challenge for Governor Nyong’o’s administration.

But the survey showed he did well in provision of street lighting, clean water and early childhood education services.

Prof Nyong'o inherited a huge debt from his predecessor Jack Ranguma’s regime. The county chief said when he took over, Kisumu County owed Sh3.5 billion, including Sh17 million power bill.

But Governor Nyong’o is still facing a court battle over his election victory after his predecessor appealed High Court ruling upholding his poll win.
