Some students of Maseno University who were due for graduation this Friday could miss out on the important occasion over a series of issues that have resulted in confusion.

The university’s Director of Public Relations Owen McOnyango told the Nation that some students may miss out, normally due to unpaid fees balances, disciplinary issues or missing marks.

“It is not in our interest to lock out anyone from the graduation list. The verification is still going on. The issue of the missing names are being looked into,” said Dr McOnyango.

ASSURANCE

He said the relevant officials in the various departments are working round the clock to see to it that nobody is locked out of the graduation.

The issue was raised on Monday after a number of students, mainly pursuing education courses, alleged they had been dropped from the graduation list despite clearing with all the relevant departments as is procedure.

One of the students who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being reprimanded said they complained to the dean of the Faculty of Education over the huge number of students not in the graduation list.

“Personally, I neither have pending fees balances nor missing marks yet I am not in the graduation list. When we raised the issue with the dean, he promised to look into the matter,” said the student.

FRUSTRATED

On Tuesday, several other students said they were getting frustrated as the graduation nears.

The situation forced officials in the School of Education to hold a crisis meeting but its outcome was not immediately clear.

Students’ union chairman George Sam said the problem could be as a result of the digitised system which the university has used to generate the graduation list.

“We are having a new integrated management system which I think differs from the previous one and it could have resulted in this challenge,” said Mr Sam.
