Kitui principal charged with raping student

A secondary school principal has been charged in a Kitui court with raping one his Form Four female students.

Mr Samuel Matuvi Kimanzi, 58, the principal of Mosa Mixed Secondary School in Kisasi District, allegedly went into a girls’ dormitory on the night of May 21 this year for a random inspection.

According to the student’s statement to detectives, Mr Kimanzi allegedly summoned the victim outside the dormitory after his random inspection, took her to the school fence and raped her.

The student told the police that the principal warned her of dire consequences if she reported the incident.

After the ordeal, the student said she went back to the dormitory weeping and informed her colleagues who decided to protest by boycotting classes the following morning.

The students rioted until the victim’s guardian was notified and picked her from school, then took her to Kitui County Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

After taking her to the hospital, her guardian then reported the incident to police in Mbitini market.

Following the continued student unrest, police officers arrested the principal two days after and launched investigations.

Mr Kimanzi, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Marianne Murage denied the rape charge and was released on Sh50,000 cash bail.

The prosecution has said it will line up 10 witnesses in the case which is scheduled for hearing on September 3 this year.

The case comes up as the country is reeling from the shock of similar rape incident involving students at Moi Girls School-Nairobi.
