Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori has said he will push for the secession of Coast region if a proposal to split Kenya into 14 administrative units is passed.

In April, opposition leader Raila Odinga proposed the country to adopt a three-tier government that will see the formation of 14 regional blocs.

But Mr Dori vowed to oppose the merging of coastal counties with other devolved units as the debate for a referendum intensifies.

"We have seen the benefits of devolution here in Kwale, and what is needed now is to strengthen it to benefit locals as opposed to a referendum," he said. The MP said he will not support constitutional changes, saying those calling for a referendum want to create positions for themselves.
