A swimming picnic for three students from the Kenya Medical Training College in Msambweni turned tragic after one of them drowned.

The first-year student drowned at Sawa Sawa Beach on Sunday, Kwale County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo said.

Mr Ngumo said the young man was swimming with his colleagues at 3pm when he was overpowered by high tides.

Msambweni police boss Joseph Chebusit said man dived into the ocean and took too long to resurface.

When his colleagues noticed that his stay in the water was unusual they called for help.

Police officers and some volunteers searched for the body and were able to retrieve it at 8pm.

The body was taken to Msambweni County Referral Hospital mortuary.
