A man and his daughter accused of murdering a Nanyuki businessman last December will remain in custody until February 20 when their application to be released on bond will be determined.

Nanyuki Resident Judge Hatari Waweru also ruled that the pre-trial of Mr Charles Macharia and Ms Jane Wanjiku, 23, begins on March 18 and 19.

The two, who were arraigned at the Nyeri High Court last month, were remanded after pleading not guilty.

They are jointly charged, with others not before court, with murdering Mr George Gachibi on December 4, 2018 in Nanyuki town, Laikipia County.

When the two suspects appeared in court on Wednesday, defense lawyers Mr Reckson Shikuku and Mr Muthuri Mutea applied that they be remanded at King’ong’o GK Prison in Nyeri citing their safety. The prosecutor Mr Jackson Mutende did not object.

Justice Waweru directed the prosecution to supply the accused persons with witness statements and any documents of evidence within seven days.

“The deceased’s family may file and serve an affidavit they expect to give within seven days of today (Wednesday). The accused persons may file and serve a replying affidavit in respect to such affidavits within seven days of service” said Justice Waweru.

The two were arrested at their home in Kirwara village, Gatanga in Murang’a County on December 5, 2018 by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations department.

ELECTRONICS

Police said they were found with the deceased’s car and electronics.

The body of Mr George Gachibi, the proprietor of Nanyuki’s Checkers Bar and Restaurant, was found lying in a pool of blood by his employees who had gone to check on him after he failed to report on duty and answer their phone calls.
