Confirming the incident, Nyahururu police boss Ezekiel Chepkwony said that the suspect stabbed his wife repeatedly at her back.
The police boss noted that the couple had a dispute that might have led to the murder.
Shock and anger gripped Kango-ini village in Kinamba Township, Laikipia County on Tuesday after a man reportedly stabbed his wife to death before running away.
Emotions ran high in the sleepy village as residents and neighbours tried to come to terms with the incident.
According to Susan Njoki, a neighbour, the suspect identified as Peter Kamau Irungu, 45 stabbed his wife of 10 years following a family dispute.
“They have been living together with his wife of whom they have five children together but their marriage was full of quarrels,” she said.
DRUG ADDICT
Another neighbour who sought anonymity said the suspect is a habitual bhang smoker, noting that this might have led him to committing the inhuman act.
“Bhang smoking is rampant in this village, with the suspect being a known addict. We are suspecting that it is his addiction to drugs that drove him to committing the act,” added the villager.
Confirming the incident, Nyahururu police boss Ezekiel Chepkwony said that the suspect stabbed his wife repeatedly at her back.
“At around 8.24 am we received report of the incident from the area Assistant chief, and our officer rushed to the scene and found the body lying in a pool of blood,” he said.
Mr Chepkwony said the suspect managed to escape on a bicycle after committing the crime but police are looking for him.
“We are appealing to the the public to work closely with the police officers by giving leads that would help in arresting him,” said Mr Chepkwony.
The police boss noted that the couple had a dispute that might have led to the murder noting, “I urge those in families to always seek better ways of solving their differences and try to evade such situations leading to murder”.
The body of the victim was taken to Nyahururu county and Referral hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
Earlier in the week, the government raised concerns over increasing cases of gender based violence that has continued to wreck families.
Led by Gender Principal Secretary Sabina Kwekwe and Nyandarua County Commissioner Mr Boaz Cherutich urged Kenyans to keep off the vice.
Ms Kwekwe noted that the violence had become a norm and reports of children raped, women butchered and men assaulted by their spouses were being reported daily.
Mr Cherutich said we are sensitising the public on gender based violence to ensure that everyone is safe and the culprits are brought to book.
