Forty-eight passengers aboard a Tawakal bus from Mombasa to Lamu escaped unhurt after the vehicle veered off the road and rolled at Maisha Masha on the Lamu-Mombasa road on Sunday evening.

The incident was blamed on the heavy rains pounding the area.

The rains have made the Lamu-Garsen road, which is under construction, slippery.

Confirming the incident, Mpeketoni OCPD Harrison Njuguna said only the driver sustained minor injuries on the hands and legs while the rest of the passengers were safe.

DRIVER INJURED

“There was an accident involving a Tawakal bus at Maisha Masha. It is only the driver who was injured on the hands but the rest of the passengers escaped unhurt. The bus wasn’t speeding. The accident has generally been caused by slipperiness on the road due to heavy rains.. Some parts of the road are also in a poor state as construction is still under way,” said Mr Njuguna.

A passenger, Mr Yusuf Omar, called on the government to complete building the Lamu-Garsen road to help reduce accidents.

“All these accidents are as a result of the dilapidated state of the road. The road is currently under construction and this makes navigation tricky even for the most experienced of drivers. Some parts of the road have huge potholes and others are very slippery. We want it completed,” said Mr Omar.
