Police officers injured in suspected Shabaab attack

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants injured two police officers and burned their vehicle in Milihoi, Lamu County.

Coast Regional Commander Mwivanda said the incident happened on the Lamu-Garsen road at 2.45pm.

"A police land cruiser with our officers was heading to Mpeketoni from Lamu when they encountered the militants who ambushed them at Milihoi area," he said.

Mr Mwivanda said that during the assault another personal vehicle was also burned, but the driver's whereabouts are unknown.

The injured were taken to Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital, but are expected to be airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Mr Mwivanda said enough security officers from the Kenya Defence Forces, General Service Unit and regular police have been deployed to deal with the situation.
