Residents to be paid Sh800m for Lamu coal plant land

The National Lands Commission (NLC) has completed verification of individuals whose land was acquired for the Lamu coal plant.
The commission has approved 514 names of people who will receive monetary compensation from the NLC.
Initially, the commission had received a list of 615 individuals who wanted to be compensated for the 975 acres of land acquired for the Sh200 billion project at Kwasasi area in Hindi division, Lamu County.
He said at least Sh800 million will be paid to the affected families with an acre being compensated at Sh800,000.
The project, by Amu Power is expected to generate at least 1,050 megawatts of power upon completion.
Speaking to the Nation on Sunday, NLC chairperson Muhammad Swazuri the commission identified 23 individuals who had made multiple claims for the same piece of land.
He said the multiple registrations followed family disputes on whose name should be on the list for compensation.
Prof Swazuri said 70 individuals, whose names had appeared on the initial list of 615, failed to turn up for the verification exercise.
The NLC boss said the commission had already requested for funds from the national government which shall be channelled to the approved landowners.
