Residents of Matanya in Mpeketoni, Lamu West, on Tuesday woke up to a rude shock after a man hanged himself over domestic squabbles.
Mr Philip Ngugi Kifaitu, 30, is said to have committed suicide after finding out that his wife was cheating on him.
Villagers who talked to the Nation said the father of two had gone missing two months ago after learning that his wife was unfaithful.
Mr Emmanuel Wanyoike, a neighbour, said the man’s body was found dangling from a tree, just metres away from his homestead.
“He had gone missing for almost two months. He just resurfaced recently only to commit suicide. We are aware of the misunderstandings with his wife. He has been accusing his wife of infidelity. We suspect that has led him to commit suicide,” Mr Wanyoike said.
Mpeketoni Officer Commanding Police Division Christopher Limo confirmed the incident, saying police have already launched investigations into the matter.
“It’s true. There is a man who has committed suicide this morning and police are already at the scene. We suspect it’s a matter involving domestic squabbles. We are investigating and if there is a third party involved, we will arrest and interrogate them,” Mr Limo said.
Mpeketoni Senior Chief Philip Githinji also confirmed the incident, saying the man had burnt his house and all his belongings before disappearing.
“He torched his house in July before disappearing. He even posted on his Facebook wall what he was going through. He had even revealed the plan to take his life. He had said he was really hurt because he found his wife with another man. We believe his death is related to what the couple was going through,” Mr Githinji said.
He called on locals to learn to share their problems and challenges in life with others so that they can be assisted instead of rushing to commit suicide.
The body was taken to the Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
