Armed gunmen Saturday night shot dead University of Nairobi lecturer Prof Stephen Nzuve outside his house in Tala, Machakos County.

Following the shooting, residents have decried the rise in such incidents and blamed police for inaction.

According to the residents, Prof Nzuve’s shooting is the fourth incident in the past few weeks.

The attacks, they say, happen as early as 9pm with residents being attacked as the go home after work.

After shooting Prof Nzuve, the gunmen later attacked a pastor, Bernard Musyoka, a few meters from the professor’s residence where they gained entry by shooting at the steel doors.

Prof Nzuve was shot outside his gate as he drove in after escorting visitors who had come to congratulate his wife who had graduated during the day.

Residents say police have known of the existence of the gang but very little has been done to deal with the heightened insecurity in the area.

They have questioned the much-hyped police vehicles launched by Governor Alfred Mutua which were meant to enhance patrols in the county.

They have also accused the police of complacency saying that after Saturday’s incident, police arrived long after the gang, believed to be numbering five, had left the scene.

Prof Nzuve has been a long serving dean of the School of Business at the University of Nairobi.
