A driver and his conductor died on Monday evening when their lorry plunged into River Thwake, on the Machakos-Kitui road.

The lorry, which was transporting cement and hardware goods to Kitui from Machakos town, plunged into the river after the driver lost control, Mwala OCPD Henry Kimathi said.

Bags of cement, metal bars and other items were scattered all over the scene as police and volunteers tried to retrieve the vehicle from the river.

The lorry’s brakes might have failed leading to the crash, with eyewitnesses saying the road is good and there is a speed bump near the bridge.

“I suspect something went wrong with the steering. The road is in good condition,” said Kioko Kasuki, a witnesses at the scene.

The bodies of the two were taken to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary.
