Reprieve as Elwak Airstrip set to resume operations

Operations at Elwak Airstrip are set to resume weeks after it was closed over security concerns.

This is after the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) Mandera South office stepped in and built a Sh4 million waiting bay at the airstrip.

The waiting bay includes a VIP lounge, security checkpoints and toilets, according to Mr Issa Haji Abdi, chairman NG-CDF Mandera South constituency.

“The project was to provide shelter against rain and hot sun to travellers and any person visiting the airstrip,” he said.

Seats have also been purchased and security cameras installed at the facility.

While recommending closure of the airstrip in letter dated May 23, 2018, Mandera South Deputy County Commissioner Daniel Bundotich said the airstrip lacked guidance from the Airport Police Unit and therefore exposing the planes and users to risk.

In the letter to travel agencies based in Elwak town, Mr Bundotich argued that the airstrip did not meet Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) safety and regulatory requirements.

“This is part of the requirements of the airport regulatory agencies and we had to step in so that locals can maximize on this airstrip that has eased transport between here and Nairobi,” said Mr Abdi.

The lounge is set to be officially opened next week by the MP Adan Haji Ali.
