Man killed, livestock stolen in Loiyangalani village raid

A man was killed and more than 50 animals stolen during a raid at Sarima village in Marsabit County on Monday.

Speaking to the Nation on phone, Loiyangalani Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Enock Nyarango said the assailants came from the neighbouring Samburu County.

NO REVENGE

Mr Nyarango said they stole 50 camels and number of goats but that police officers pursued them.

"We have asked our counterparts in Samburu for aid so we can easily capture the raiders," he said.

The DCC asked the affected Turkana community not take to retaliate as security team held peace meetings with the people and their elders.

"Communities here rarely hold back. They go on revenge missions after attacks on their people. However, we hope the Turkana will keep still so we can break the cycle," said Mr Nyarango.

Earlier this year, three people were killed in the village by assailants from Samburu who were in search of stolen weapons.

In another incident, three people lost their lives in a vengeance mission at Olturot village.

Meanwhile, at least 16 schools in Marsabit have been closed following ethnic clashes that left 10 people dead last week.

County Director for Education Milton Nzioka said yesterday that 13 primary and three secondary schools had been closed. and that 81 KCSE candidates had been affected.

He added that 394 KCPE candidates could also face a challenge if peace does not prevail in the region this week.
