Two killed, five injured as lorry ploughs into crowd in Igembe

Two people were killed while five others sustained injuries when a lorry ploughed into a crowd at Athi market, Igembe South, Meru County Thursday evening.

The two men, one a boda boda rider and his customer were at a bus stop when the driver of the lorry that was carrying firewood lost control of the vehicle and ploughed into kiosks before hitting an electric post. 

Rescue operators who included Red Cross officials, police and fire fighters had a difficult time trying to retrieve the bodies which were trapped under the the vehicle.

ERECT BUMPS

Mr Joseph Mung’athia a businessman said lorry swerved as it neared the bus stop before it veered off the road and hit those who were standing by the road.

Mr Julius Miriti urged the authorities to erect bumps in the market to limit the speed of vehicles plying the new road. Police at the scene confirmed the fatalities. The lorry was ferrying firewood from Mikinduri to Igembe tea factory when its brakes failed.

The lorry driver was among the injured while the bodies were removed to Nyambene Sub County Hospital, Maua.
