Meru medic held for ‘helping’ 15-year-old girl procure abortion

Police in Muthara, Meru County, are holding doctor for allegedly helping a Form Three student to procure an abortion.

Lailuba residents who saw the 15-year old girl enter a house, which also serves as a clinic, alerted the police after the girl failed to leave the premises for two days.

Buuri area chief John Mamira said the medic had left the girl in a make-shift ward which was locked.  

Mr Mamira said the police later ordered the middle aged medic to open the door before the officers rescued the student.

“The girl had been left there alone with needles in various veins. The villagers only managed to open the window but could not rescue her because the door was locked. She was very weak,” said Mr Mamira.

The student was rushed to Muthara sub county hospital where the dead foetus removed. The student is said to have fled home three days ago.

Mr Mamira said the student, who hails from Lanyiru, lives with relatives at Ncuui where she attends a local secondary school.

The administrator urged teachers to ensure they kept tab of the whereabouts of their students.

“The girl had not been seen in school for three days. Her parents and teachers did not know where she was. If a student does not attend classes, it is good to notify parents,” said Mr Mamira.
