National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has assured miraa farmers of new markets.

The Speaker said he had held talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta over the ban of the crop in parts of Europe.

He said the hopes of accessing new markets are high because “the feedback has been promising”.

Speaking at Mbura Njiru Catholic Church in Igembe North during a fundraiser on Sunday, Mr Muturi said miraa is at the heart of the Meru community.

“I understand these things very much.

“When talking to the President I keep on insisting that the economy of Meru has collapsed because of the closure of some markets.

“For the children in this region to get quality education and good health, miraa should be fetching good money for farmers,” said Mr Muturi.

He added that he is ready to defend the crop.

“I usually see how your leaders defend miraa in Parliament.

“This is an indication that it means a lot to you,” said Mr Muturi.
