A taxi driver on Wednesday drowned in Migori town after he slipped and fell into River Onyinjo.

The victim, only identified as Odhiambo, slipped and fell while crossing Onyinjo Bridge at about 7pm.

Witnesses said the victim had visited a nearby bar as he waited for his car to dry up on the river bank after being washed.

"But as the car was drying by the river bank, he decided to check into a nearby pub and took a few drinks. Later, he opted to cross the bridge on foot when he drowned," said a witness, Mr George Otieno.

Several people who responded to his cry for help could not rescue him because the river is flooded following heavy rains.

Migori County police boss Joseph Nthenge asked motorists and pedestrians to be careful during this rainy season.

The rains have caused flooding in Migori with at least 700 families displaced from their homes in Nyatike sub-County.
