Police in Mombasa have arrested 10 suspected criminals following the killing of one person and critical injury of three in Kisauni and Nyali constituencies.

Led by county police commander Johnston Ipara, they conducted sting operations to end the crimes that have resulted in more than 15 deaths.

NO-GO ZONES

Police sprang into action as some parts of the two sub-counties are no-go zones.

They include Kadzandani, Vikwatani, Mafisini, Soweto Junda, Mishomoroni and Kwa Bulo, where the criminals have been operating day and night.

They use crude weapons in the attacks.

The suspects, among them a woman, were arrested between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Mr Ipara led the raid at Kadzandani after the four people were attacked by criminals who were in police officers.

“We raided a house here where one of the ring leaders stayed but he managed to escape. We will catch up with them as the ones we have arrested have shared vital information," he told the press of the exercise that involved more than 20 police officers.

SPREE

A few metres from where the operation was conducted in Kwa Bulo was where three of the victims, among them a woman who owns an M-Pesa shop, were attacked.

She was admitted at Jocham Hospital and two men taken to Coast Provincial General Hospital (CPGH) with deep cuts in their heads. They were identified as Anthony Mutunga and Stanley Mbito.

The two men were attacked by two people armed with a pistol and machetes, according to witness Martin Chunguti.

Mr Chunguti is Mr Mutunga's uncle.

“They went to shops and houses and ordered people to get in. I saw them questioning my nephew before slashing him. They did not take anything from him. They then proceeded to the other shops where they attacked a woman and the other victim (Mr Mbito),” he said.

HEAD INJURIES

Anthony Mogaka, a nursing officer at the CPGH, said 18 people have been taken to the hospital in the last three days following assaults.

Mr Mogaka said eight were admitted on Sunday and 10 between Monday and Tuesday.

“Majority of the cases are from Mishomoroni and Kisauni. Many of those brought here have head injuries," he said.

The fear of attacks has seen residents close their businesses early.

“You do not know when you will be injured or killed. We are living by the grace of God as these areas are no longer safe. Police seem outsmarted by the gang because no day goes by without an attack,” said Mr James Ateke, a Kadzandani resident.

Last month alone, 15 people were killed in Kisauni and Nyali.

Last week, police put up three police posts - in Kadzandani, Kadzonzo and Konkodia - where most of the killings have been reported.
