Two people died on Tuesday afternoon after they were buried alive while scooping sand in a Bamburi quarry in Mombasa.

The two were among three sand harvesters at the quarry when it collapsed.

The survivor, Mr Hemed Shida, 21, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Ward representative Robert Nyiro told the Nation that one of the victims, 28-year-old Rajab Kazungu died on the spot while Ali Kaingu, 30, died minutes later while being rushed to Coast General Hospital.

"It is an extremely sad day for us as the residents of Bamburi.  Losing such young souls in this manner is bad," said Mr Nyiro.

"There was a crack and a bang then we heard their screaming. We rushed to the scene and tried to rescue the three. They had been trapped and one of them had already died, " he said.
