Four die, 10 injured as landslide sweeps homes in Murang’a

Four people have died following a mudslide in Murarandia village in Kiharu Constituency, Murang’a County on Friday night while 10 others were injured after a landslide swept their homes.

According to Kahuro OCPD David Kandie, other areas that have experienced landslides are Gathaithi village in Kiharu, Lower Kambirwa, Mugoiri, Kinyona in Kigumo and Gitugi in Mathioya following hours of heavy rains.

At the same time, 25 families were left homeless and lost their property and livestock after River Sagana broke its banks and flooded their farms.

The police boss said a rescue operation is underway to help pull out the cows stuck in the mud.

INJURED

Those injured in the mudslide were rushed to Muriranjas Hospital while others were transferred to Murang’a County Referral Hospital.

"I and my team are in the ground to rescue the area residents to a safer location and we are doing this in conjunction with the county government," the OCPD said.

Mr Kandie has called on people of goodwill to help the affected families.

On Monday, a landslide occurred at Posta along the Murang’a-Kiriaini road causing confusion among people plying the route.

CONDOLENCES

While sending his condolence message to the families affected by the lanslide, Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria advised residents living in low-lying areas and those living in areas prone to landslides to move away until the situation normalises.

The governor said they will set up a placement camp for the victims in order to ensure that they do not continue living in areas prone to landslides.

"Today is a sad day for the residents of Murang'a County. May the bereaved family members receive (my) heartfelt condolences.

"My administration will ensure that their living standards have returned to normal," the governor said.

He donated foodstuffs and clothes to the landslide victims.
