Over 50 Jubilee, ODM MCAs kicked out by Nairobi residents

What you need to know:

  • The Assembly, since the first day, had been an arena of violence and all manner of drama — maybe reason why majority of the MCAs were sent packing during party primaries.
  • And in 2014, the County Assembly proceedings were interrupted as members bade for each other’s’ blood during a debate to approve names of Ad Hoc committee members.

As the major political parties held their primaries to pick candidates for the August General Election, Nairobi residents were not left out in sending a clear message to politicians who do not resonate well with the electorate.

As the dust settles down after the vicious nominations battles in the city, over 50 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) are assured of not setting their feet back to the floor of the House after the August 8 polls.

The Assembly, since the first day, had been an arena of violence and all manner of drama — maybe reason why majority of the MCAs were sent packing during party primaries.

The political hurricane did not spare both Jubilee and ODM sides as the MCAs have hit news headlines for engaging in fist fights whenever either side felt a debate was not in its favour.

For instance, when a motion seeking to impeach Governor Evans Kidero was brought on the floor of the House, Viwandani MCA Samuel Nyagwara (ODM) — who sponsored the motion — was attacked with kicks and blows and thrown out of the Assembly by pro-Kidero MCAs while those from the Jubilee side went to the rescue of their ‘ally’.

NKAISSERY INTERVENTION

And in 2014, the County Assembly proceedings were interrupted as members bade for each other’s’ blood during a debate to approve names of Ad Hoc committee members.

Later the Assembly would be embroiled in a fight for office space with the executive forcing Interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery to intervene.

In August 2016, the opening of the new Chamber would also be disrupted with both ODM and Jubilee sides failing to agree on the guest of honour. To date, the Chambers are yet to be officially unveiled but they are already in use.

In Jubilee those who were strong supporters of Water Cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa when he expressed his intention to join the Nairobi gubernatorial contest and later shifted their allegiance to former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth were kicked out.

Minority chief whip, Hashim Kamau, was also rejected in his Ward.

However both the ODM majority leader Elias Okumu and Jubilee minority leader Abdi Guyo won the primaries.
REJECTED

The assembly is comprised of 85 elected MCAS — 43 (ODM) and Jubilee 42.

However towards the end of the term two ODM MCAs; Mr Nyangwara (Viwandani) and Dianah Kapeen (South C) defected to Jubilee.

Both were rejected by their supporters in their respective wards during the nominations.

Results in three wards contested thus no specific winner was announced. Those affected include Akuk Maurice Omondi (Nyayo Highrise), Stephen Kamau Thuo (Karura) and Daniel Oria Odhiambo of Dandora Area IV.

Three other MCAs flexed their muscles and eyed bigger seats but they lost. These include Alex Ouda Otieno (Mugumoini Ward) who ran for Langata MP’s seat but whose results are disputed; Beatrice Kwamboka (Mountain View) lost the Woman Rep ticket to businesswoman Esther Passaris and Kennedy Okeyo Ngondi (Kware) who attempted to run for Embakasi South MP but bowed out of the race.
