Pedestrians and motorists on Waiyaki Way were shocked when a body was discovered on a footbridge in Westlands, Nairobi next to the St Mark’s Church.

According to John Kimani, one of the volunteers who helped in its retrieval, the decomposing body was discovered by boda boda motorcycle riders who detected a foul smell at around 9 am Wednesday.

“I don’t understand how he got there but he must have been living there. It was very difficult to get the body down,” Mr Kimani said.

The body was stuck in a crevice of the bridge, between the stairs and the walkway.

Clothes and matchboxes were also found in the gap.

It took a multi-agency team made up of police officers from Spring Valley, the Nairobi County Fire and Rescue Department as well as volunteers, mostly boda boda riders, to remove the corpse of the unidentified man.

Passers-by and curious onlookers covered their noses as the body was lowered from the bridge.

Traffic moved slowly as motorists slowed down to get a glimpse of what was happening.

The body was transferred to the City Mortuary.
