Police in Kasarani on Friday evening gunned down three suspected robbers and recovered two loaded firearms.

An officer attached to the Special Crime Prevention Unit was also injured during the 4pm shootout.

Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi said police, who had information that the suspects were on a robbery mission, intercepted them on the Mwiki-Kasarani road, but the suspects started shooting at the officers.

“The officers returned fire and all of the suspects were fatally injured. They recovered two pistols; a Ceska and a Beretta loaded with eight bullets in total,” Mr Mboloi said.

The officer said that a motorbike that the three were using was also recovered. The bodies were taken to the City Funeral Home.

The officer who sustained bullet wounds in his thigh is receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi. Ballistic detectives collected several spent cartridges from the scene of the crime.

Nairobi County Police Commander Benson Kibue said the three had been on their radar for a long time.

“These were dangerous criminals and the fact that we have managed to find them is a great stride in the fight against crime in the city,” Mr Kibue said.

The incident came hours after police arrested three suspects in Ngei Estate in Huruma and recovered three pistols.

The three, according to Starehe OCPD Benard Nyakwaka, were hiding in a house. Police began a search for them after they received information from the public. They are being held for questioning.
