One person has died and two others seriously injured when a wall bordering a building under construction collapsed in Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu County.

The wall according to eye witnesses collapsed at around 11am on Tuesday.

OLD AND WEAK

The victims were working at the site when the wall fell on them, said a labourer who was lucky because he was at a distance from the wall when it fell.

'The wall was old and weak, and the ongoing excavations next to it may have contributed to the disaster,' said area MCA Cyrus Omondi, noting that there may have been about 100 people working at the site at the time of the disaster.

He added that the dead and the injured have been taken to Thika Level 5 Hospital.

RESCUE OPERATIONS

The owner of the property was however not available even as rescue operations by the Kenya Red Cross still went on.

"The county planning team and the police are looking for the owner of the building under construction since he let workers work under the conditions bearing in mind that he knew the wall was weak," said Mr Omondi.
