Pumwani Maternity Hospital has been closed indefinitely after medical staff joined the strike by Nairobi County workers.

The employees are demanding payment of their salary arrears.

The largest maternity hospital in the East and Central Africa region-where between 50 to 60 deliveries are carried out daily-was ordered closed last Friday after nurses and clinical officers joined the strike by the county workers.

Sources who sought anonymity as they are not allowed to speak to the press told the Nation that mothers and their new-born babies had been transferred to Mama Lucy, Kenyatta National Hospital, Mbagathi and Kiambu district hospitals.

"The 25 doctors who had been seconded to the hospital by the Ministry of Health are waiting to be deployed following the decision by the hospital administration to close the busy medical facility indefinitely," the sources added.
