Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria, who was Saturday arrested after an altercation with police officers, failed to take plea on Monday despite appearing in a Naivasha court.

Dressed in a blue sports jacket, matching black trousers, slippers and also wore a neck brace, the MP walked into the courtroom with difficulty and sat meditatively for close to an hour.

Mr Gikaria was later informed that his plea taking had been deferred to Monday next week, prompting him to complain bitterly.

“I was told to appear before a Naivasha court on Monday for plea taking which I dutifully did only to be informed that the matter has been pushed to May 27, 2019,” said the legislator.

SUPPORTERS

His supporters, who travelled from Nakuru, jammed the courtroom as they waited for the MP to take plea.

Speaking to journalists outside the court, Mr Gikaria accused the police of subjecting him to severe beatings, moments after he was arrested on Saturday.

“I was tortured by the DCI officers who arrested me. I was also subjected to inhumane conditions and, at one time, I passed out,” said Mr Gikaria.

The MP, who appeared to be in pain, sustained injuries on his left hand and right leg. He said the beatings reminded him of torture chambers of the past era.

BILL OF RIGHTS

He accused the police of contravening the Bill of Rights, claiming he was barred from seeking medical treatment despite sustaining injuries during the arrest.

Some of the charges preferred against the MP include resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

But Mr Gikaria questioned why he was assaulted by ten police officers, yet no action has been taken against them.

“I was held in a leaking corridor for close to five hours yet at the time, it was raining heavily,” said the MP.

Mr Gikaria was arrested at Pipeline in Nakuru town on Saturday afternoon following a fracas over alleged land grabbing.

Deputy County Commander Kirinya Limbitu said the MP also slapped a deputy sub-county police commander during the incident.
