Machakos School parents worried by dilapidated facilities

Parents at Machakos Boys' High School have appealed to the Ministry of Education to renovate dilapidated infrastructure at the institution.

The appeal comes in the wake of an assurance by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha that the government will release Sh8.2 billion to improve school infrastructure in 30 counties.

Speaking in Nakuru town over the weekend, the parents said the school's infrastructure was crumbling.

UPGRADE ROAD

Led by Mr Jesse Karanja, the parents urged Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua to upgrade the road leading to the school.

“As parents, we know education is a national government function, but the County Government of Machakos can address some of the problems in the school like the poor road leading to the institution,” said Mr Karanja.

They called on former alumni of the school, who hold top positions in the public and private sectors, to help the institution regain its former glory.

“Although it is not the duty of former students to equip the school, the alumni should also chip in,” said Mr Karanja.

The parents said that the school had no perimeter wall and the one under construction had stalled due to lack of funds.

“As parents, we welcome the move by the government to release money to renovate schools. Priority should be given to top performing schools like Machakos Boys' High School,” said Mr Karanja.

CONGESTION

Many secondary schools are experiencing congestion and facilities such as toilets, laboratories, dining halls and playing fields have been stretched to the limits.

Last year, Machakos Boys' High School had a mean score of 8.6, an improvement from the 7.5 it attained the previous year.

The school had 1 A, 48 A-, B+ 59, B 58, B- 53, C+ 28, C 21, C- 15, D+ 6 and D 1. The school had 290 candidates.
