Retired teachers seeking Sh42.3 billion in pension dues have appealed to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to intervene and ensure the money is released.

The teachers, led by Mr Joseph Mwenja, told the Nation in Nakuru Town that they were optimistic that the money will be released by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

They, however, accused some senior government officials, including the Attorney-General, of frustrating their efforts to get the money.

“We call upon the newly appointed CS, Dr Matiang’i, to negotiate on our behalf and convince the National Treasury to fast-track the release of the cash to the teachers who served the country selflessly,” said Mr Mwenja.

On July 30, the High Court in Nakuru ordered the teachers’ former employer, the TSC, to liaise with the Treasury, the Controller of Budget, the Auditor-General, the director of pensions and other relevant offices to settle the arrears.

The teachers’ lawyer, Mr Dominic Kimatta, told the Nation that the TSC is yet to release the money.

He said some of the retirees have died during the 17-year court battle.

Mr Kimatta said in August, he served relevant government offices with the judgment ordering the release of the pension cash, for implementation.
