A family in Kabianga Farm in Molo is in mourning after their 14-year-old daughter who committed suicide in her bedroom.

The body of Sharon Chepkurui,14, was found dangling from the roof on Saturday.

Her mother, Ms Janet Mitet, said her daughter spent the night at her neighbour’s home on Friday without informing her.

"After realising where my daughter was on Saturday morning, I decided to go for her as it was not her first time to spend the night away from home. She was on medication and I was worried that she had skipped taking her prescription," said Ms Mitet.

QUARRELLED

When at home, her mother said, they had a quarrel before she asked her daughter to prepare lunch for the family and then she left for church.

“A few minutes later, a friend rushed to the church and told me about the incident,” Ms Mitet said.

"My daughter was very bright in school; she was hardworking and we had high expectations of her,” she said of the Class Seven pupil at Tumaini Primary School in Molo.

The school’s headteacher Alice Obiero said Sharon was hardworking and her performance was average.

SHOCK

"We have really lost a good learner at an early age," said Ms Obiero.

"When we received the news, everyone in school was shocked. There were no signs that she would commit suicide,” added Ms Obiero.

Mr David Kimalit, a resident, urged children to share their problems with neighbours, parents or relatives in order to avoid such incidents.

"Parents should engage the teachers and sit down together with the children and look for solutions," said Mr Kimalit.
