At least six statements requested by ward reps at the Nakuru County Assembly were deferred on Wednesday due to the absence of chairpersons of various committees.

The statements were lined up on the order paper during the Wednesday afternoon session.

“The committee chairpersons were expected to respond to statements and it is shameful that no statement was issued,” said acting Speaker Philip Wanjohi.

The first statement was sought by Biashara MCA Peter Njoroge Wanyaguthii on the status of recovery of public property in the county by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Lands, Housing and Physical Planning committee chairperson Stephen Ng’ethe Chege and his deputy John Mwangi Macharia were absent.

The committee did not respond to status of Kahuruko water project and Gicheha community borehole in Biashara Ward in Naivasha as requested by area MCA Joel Karuri on August 7.

The Lands committee was on the spot for failing to respond to another statement concerning the erection gantries along Nakuru- Nairobi highway by the county government as requested by Mr Stanley Karanja.

OVERSTAYED

Ms Cecilia Karanja (Visoi) wanted the chairperson committee on Trade, Tourism, Cooperative and Planning to issue a statement concerning sale of illicit alcohol in the county.

The chairperson Paul Kimutai Langat (Kapkures) and his deputy Dr Peter Mbae (Kabazi) were absent.

Ms Karanja said she had requested the statement in August.

“This statement has overstayed. Five people in my ward have died after consuming illicit brews,” said Ms Karanja.

Nominated MCA Zaituni Ibrahim who is a member of the Trade committee defended the committee saying they had not received the statement.

However, Mr Wanjohi said that the statement was sought on August 7 and the committee had enough time to address the matter.

Mr Joseph Mungai Kamanu (Maiella) faulted the nominated MCA for misleading the House on the status of the statement requested by Ms Karanja.

“Ms Ibrahim is misleading this House. This statement on sale of illicit brews is long overdue and either the committee is sleeping on the job and is not ready to respond,” said Mr Kamanu.

ROADS

Ms Karanja also sought to know the status of Mogoiwet and Lenglent ECD from the committee on Early Childhood Education and Vocational Training.

The chairperson of the committee Douglas Ayabei and his deputy Peter Njoroge Maina (Murindat) were also absent.

However, a member of the committee Symon Mwangi (Menengai West) said the matter was being discussed and promised a response in two weeks’ time.

Another statement requested by MCA Karanja Mburu concerning naming of roads was deferred as the Roads, Transport and Public works committee chairperson Chege Machembu came late.

However, Mr Wahome Jambo Kenya, a member of the committee, said the statement would be ready by November 20.

Gilgil MCA Jane Ngugi said most of the chairpersons were not aware the statements would be on the Order paper.
