Shock as Form One student hangs himself in Elburgon

A Form One student has committed suicide at Kasarani estate in Elburgon, Nakuru County.

Molo Sub-County Police Commander Isaac Odumbe said the body of Fredrick Kibugi was Wednesday evening found dangling from the roof of his room by his aunt.

"There were no suicide notes at the scene that could help establish what may have pushed the teenager to kill himself," said Mr Odumbe.

Mr Odumbe said the 14-year-old boy was a student at Elburgon DEB Secondary School.

MID-TERM BREAK

His aunt, Ms Teresiah Mugure, said Kibugi had arrived a few hours earlier from his father's residence in Kiambu County where he had travelled for mid-term break.

"I had arrived from my place of work and found the boy watching TV. I then asked him to light a jiko which he did. The boy informed me that he needed to rest in his room as he had a headache," recalled Ms Mugure.

Speaking to the Nation by phone, Ms Mugure said she had lived with boy since 2006 when he was in Class Four after his mother died.

She said as she walked outside to check if the boy had gone to sleep, she noticed that his room was closed from inside with the lights on.

"I peeped through an opening from outside but did not spot him on the bed. I got suspicious when I called him several times without a response," said Ms Mugure.

HANGING FROM ROOF

She said that after she forced the door open, she found Kibugi's body dangling from the roof, behind the door.

Mr Joseph Ngatho, the boy's father, said he was shocked when he heard the news of his son’s death.

"I escorted him at 5.30am in the morning and he was in a jovial mood," said his father, adding that he had not quarrelled with him when he left home to go to school.

The student’s body was later taken to Elburgon Sub-County Hospital mortuary as police launched investigations into the suicide.
