Chaos broke out after the second-year student attacked the first-year at about 6am as they queued for breakfast.

He tried to escape but his schoolmates restrained him.

TENSION

The male student would have been lynched had police not arrived at the institution near near Kaiboi centre along Eldoret-Kapsabet road.

School Principal Charles Koech said they chose to close the institute in a bid to diffuse the tension.

Mr Koech said the suspect, who was taken into police custody, suffered serious injuries after he was beaten by the others.

Reports indicated that he was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, under police watch.

“Tension has remained high. The students wanted to lynch him but he was rescued by police,” he said.

In a notice to the students, Mr Koech said, "Due to students' unrest arising from the assault of a female student by a male student, it has become necessary to close the institute until further notice. You are hereby asked to vacate the institute immediately."

STALKER

Students who witnessed the attack said the man pulled the woman aside when he saw her in the queue and immediately started stabbing her.

They said he had been stalking her but that she had rejected him.

“He called her on Sunday but she did not pick his calls. He must have been angry when he saw her this morning,” one of the learners said.

Transport was paralysed along Eldoret-Kapsabet road as the learners took to the streets to protest the killing.

Nandi North divisional police commander Ezekiel Kiche said police broke the protest and took the body to Kaiboi Mission Hospital mortuary.
