Meet the Nandi MPs

Nandi County has four constituencies — Tinderet, Aldai, Emgwen and Mosop — and all returned ODM MPs at the last General Election, in 2007.

Henry Kosgey… The suspended Cabinet minister for Industrialisation who is MP for Tinderet is the second longest serving MP in the country, after President Kibaki, having been elected to Parliament in 1979.

He has represented Tinderet for the last 30 years but has announced he will run for senator of Nandi County.

The ODM chairman, he is one of the six people facing possible charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague.

Sally Kosgei… is the first woman in Nandi to be made minister since Independence and she is serving her first term as MP for Aldai.

Dr Kosgei served as Head of the Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet for both President Moi and, briefly, President Kibaki.

She is credited with organising the peaceful transition of power when KANU and President Moi’s heir apparent, Uhuru Kenyatta, lost power in 2002 at Uhuru Park, where Mr Kibaki was sworn in as Kenya’s third President.

The minister for Agriculture (and formerly for Higher Education) is an influential ODM figure and key supporter of the Prime Minister in Rift Valley and is known for speaking her mind.

Elijah Lagat… a former Boston Marathon champion, he is serving his first term as MP for Emgwen, after being elected for ODM when he defeated former assistant minister Stephen Tarus.

Mr Lagat is the third MP to be elected for Emgwen, which was created in 1997.

Allied to Eldoret North MP William Ruto he has indicated he will seek re-election. He is a graduate of Baraton University and says he believes in working hard to improve education, development and athletics.

David Koech… the MP for Mosop, was first elected for ODM in 2007 after defeating sitting MP John Sambu who had held Mosop for 15 years for Kanu.

A former secondary school principal, who went to Parliament after teachers rallied behind him, is a close ally of Mr William Ruto and chairman of the House education committee. He has indicated he will contest the position of senator.
